"Self Portrait" Oils on Canvas
This self-portrait was a bit of an exercise in restraint, as I wanted to produce an informal-style oil portrait without overworking the paint, or even blending it too much. I wanted the textures to remain strong, contrasting and almost graphic, which meant resisting my natural urge to keep working it until it begins to look photographic. Often, a looser oil portrait style gives room for the image to ‘breathe’ without slipping into formality.
My favourite part of the painting is the blue-green shadow cast by the lighting in my studio, but I'm pleased with the portrait too!
