"Hanuman at the Well": oil painting of Indian monkeys
This is an oil painting from a travelogue series I produced on my mother's home region of Gujarat in India. The monkeys are Hanuman Langurs, which are large and powerful, and seem to be fully aware that they are regarded as sacred by the Hindu community, showing no fear in the presence of humans.
The wall that they are bounding along is the unassuming side of an enormous, elaborate well that is constructed like an inverted pyramid, with steps leading deep into the earth to the source of cool-fresh water.
Undertaking the travelogue series of oil paintings set in India gave me the opportunity to explore different lighting effects and colour combinations from my usual English landscapes, with many vivid oranges and ochrey earth tones.
